Call for Papers:

BAAL 2022
Theme: Innovation and Social Justice in Applied Linguistics
1-3 September 2022, Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland (UK)

BAAL 2022 will be hosted by Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The conference’s theme Innovation and Social Justice in Applied Linguistics reflects an increasing interest in research that responds to real-world concerns within and beyond the field. In the face of a global health crisis and rising socio-racial awareness, our theme invites discussions around innovative and socially just practices in a field that is experiencing the multilingual, spatial, and social justice turn all at once. The current times are transformative and we hope that the conference theme will enable proposals from across disciplines and sub-disciplines of applied linguistics to stimulate conversations about the field’s responses to global turbulence and shifts. We also invite proposals to generate meaningful dialogue around current issues in language research.
We plan to hold the conference in-person with limited virtual options for participation. We will monitor the situation closely and reassess the situation in March 2022 and make a final decision as to whether the conference will be held in person or if we will have to move to an online format. Rest assured that all members will be updated as soon as any major decisions are made.

The BAAL 2022 Conference is brought to you by a team of applied linguists at School of Social Science, Education, and Social Work and School of Arts, English, and Languages at Queen’s University Belfast. Framed by mountains and sea, Belfast is the largest city in Northern Ireland and is a thriving hub for culture, technology, and the arts. It is home to a maintained Irish language and Ulster Scots presence alongside many varieties of English and the languages of newly arrived communities – a testament to its history as a site of language contact for centuries. Belfast can easily be reached by ferry (directferries.co.uk) or air, and George Best City Airport is just 10 minutes from the city centre and 15 minutes from Queen’s. Travel by ferry starts and ends at the city centre bus station.
